Periodontal therapy is a dental treatment that removes bacteria and buildup below the gum line to treat gum disease and protect your teeth and supporting bone. We can effectively treat periodontal disease, but it cannot be fully cured. Periodontal disease means that a regular cleaning will not be as effective due to recessed gums and bacteria that are beyond the gum line. When we diagnose periodontal disease, we may recommend a treatment called a “deep cleaning.”
With this treatment our dental hygienist or dentist may use a topical or local numbing agent to ensure you are comfortable. During the procedure, we gently remove plaque, bacteria, and tartar attached to the root structure and inside the deeper periodontal pockets. This helps the tissue to stabilize and heal.
The procedure minimizes bleeding and inflammation caused by bacteria and tartar while preventing further bone loss and tissue fiber destruction.
After your deep cleaning, we will schedule you for regular ongoing maintenance care. During these visits, our team thoroughly cleans your teeth and monitors your oral health to prevent the disease from recurring or progressing.
